Finding Beauty in the Mundane as a Homemaker
Homemaking is full of repetitive tasks, but there is SO much beauty in the mundane. Why? Because we live in a beautiful world made by our Creator, and the tasks that he sets before us have magnificent purpose and meaning.

God is the author of beauty.
If we take time to look around us, there is PLENTY of beauty to be found. We serve a God that decorates the land with flowers, moves the waves of beautiful blue oceans, and makes bright red apples grow from trees. He knits together our children in the womb who are born with the most adorable, squishy little toes.
When you glance at the produce on your kitchen counter, look into the bright eyes of your child, and smell the aroma of fresh bread… you can declare that God is GOOD because he made it all. Without God, this beauty would not exist. ALL that he does is good and beautiful.
God is Lord over the mundane
Here are just a few bible verses that reflect God’s view on so called “mundane” tasks. If you go through proverbs, you will see MANY places that talk about the importance of working diligently for the Lord, many of which involve repetitive tasks.
1 Thessalonians 4:11
“and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,”
Proverbs 6: 6 – 8
“Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.”
1 Timothy 5: 14
“So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander. “
Proverbs 31: 27
“She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
Colossians 3:23-24
And of course… EVERYTHING we do in order to bring honor and glory to God matters for eternity. Check out this verse from Colossians:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

God is greatly concerned about the mundane tasks, the small acts of faithfulness. Proclaiming the good news to a large crowd in a 3rd world country is no more spiritual than preparing dinner or lovingly patching up your child’s boo boo. Now, of course we cannot neglect being a witness and declaring the gospel with our mouths. But, you showing unconditional love & service to your family is a picture of the gospel. In fact, how we live this out in our own homes backs up what we say we believe.
There is no separation between the spiritual and the physical. What we do in the physical reflects what we believe spiritually. This is how we work out our faith. This impacts whether or not we neglect doing the dishes, we do it but grumble about it, or we do it with a cheerful heart.
So if we are to find beauty in the mundane, we must FIRST embrace the fact that God not only sees what we’re doing, but that he delights in it. These mundane tasks are an act of worship to Him.
Create beauty around you

When we take what God has given us and create something beautiful with it, we are reflecting his nature as image bearers. We reflect his image in this way because God is the first and ultimate Creator. He made everything out of nothing and his creation is wonderful.
Women are especially good at creating beauty. I think this is one reason why he called women specifically to be homemakers! (see Titus 2:3) We can take the most basic resources and create beauty from it, whether it’s decorating a room or putting together a delicious meal.
We can create beauty with every mundane task! Instead of dreadfully going about our house chores, let’s try enhancing the experience by creating beauty around the chores we’re doing! There are so many ways you can do this… you could intentionally choose prettier cleaning supplies and items in your home. You could listen to music or light a candle while you do your tasks. You can use essential oils to make things smell nice in your home. Bring in fresh flowers to add some natural beauty to any space. All of these things create beauty in the mundane!

Be in awe of God’s creation

Finding beauty in the mundane often comes when we intentionally choose to look at life through a positive lens. This looks like being thankful for what we have and the tasks we get to do. Making another meal means we have mouths to feed. Washing the dishes means we have food to eat. Folding the laundry means we have clothes to wear. Tending to household cleaning tasks mean we have a roof over our heads and a comfortable place to live.
We also find beauty in the mundane when we see the physical beauty in something. I love the way the eggs look sitting on my counter in their various colors. I love the detail of a hand-embroidered pattern on an apron, or the intricacies of a woven basket that holds my kitchen towels. I love the romantic lighting of a candle or lamp as I’m cooking. We can appreciate these things when we do the most mundane tasks.
- When you cook, look at the colors of the food and the fragrance it brings
- When you clean, appreciate the shine of your countertops & smell of the natural scents
- When you wash your dishes, look at the details of your favorite plates
- When you sit down on the floor to play with your kids, notice the twinkle in their eyes as they get creative
- When you fold laundry, adore your favorite items of clothing
- Notice the colors, sounds & feel of nature when you’re in your own backyard
